Often, especially when you're working on a team project, you need others to have complete access to the documents you create. But, by default, other users have Read-Only access to the files and directories you create on the Novell Linux Desktop. You can quickly and easily grant permission to your user group or others using the permission options in the Novell Linux Desktop file manager, Nautlius. Follow the steps below to change permission settings for a file or directory you create.

1. Right-click the file or directory for which you wish to change permission settings.
2. Select Properties from the context menu, OR select the file or directory and select File --> Properties.
3. Click the Permissions tab.

   

4. Check the appropriate boxes for your own (owner) permissions, group permissions, and permissions for others not in your user group.
   • For a file, Read means you can view the contents of the file, Write means you can make changes to the file, and Execute means you can execute the file if it is an executable program.
   • For a directory (or folder), Read means you can view the contents of the directory, Write means you can add and remove items from the directory, and Execute means you can access items in the directory.
5. Click Close to set the permissions.

You can also use permissions to keep personal files private. Create a directory for your personal files and set Read, Write, and Execute permissions only for you, the owner.
