OpenOffice Software Tip: Getting the Right Bullets Print E-mail

If you've ever tried saving an OpenOffice.org document in MS Word format, you've probably noticed that bulleted lists don't look exactly right. That's simply because Microsoft uses MS Symbol for its bullets and OpenOffice.org 1.1.x uses StarSymbol. Simply changing the bullet your OpenOffice.org documents use can completely eliminate this formatting issue.

  1. Place your cursor anywhere within a bulleted list.
  2. Right-click and select Numbering/Bullets.
  3. Click the Options tab.
  4. In the level box, select 1-10.
  5. Click the ... button next to Character.

  6. Scroll to select a font that you know both OpenOffice.org and Microsoft Word use, such as Century Schoolbook.
  7. Click the bullet character in the special characters dialog and click OK.

  8. Click OK again.
  9. Repeat the above steps for all the bulleted lists in your document.

OpenOffice.org 2.0 includes the correct bullets to convert to MS Word documents, so you don't need to follow the steps above to make sure they work. But, you can use the steps above to select custom bullets for your bulleted lists.
