Creating cover pages or other sections of your document that are not numbered or are numbered differently is easy in OpenOffice.org Writer. All you need to do it apply page styles. Here's how.
CreatePage Styles
- Select Format | Styles and Formatting OR press F11.
- Click the Page Styles icon.
- Right-click inside the Styles and Formatting window and select New.
- Under the Organizer tab, name the style that will be the first page without a page number (e.g. Cover Page).
- Change any other settings as appropriate.
- Click OK.
- Right-click inside the Styles and Formatting window again and select New.
- Under the Organizer tab, name the page style that will contain the main body of your document (e.g. Main Page).
- Click the Footer tab and check Footer on.
- Change any other settings as appropriate.
- Click OK.
Apply the Page Styles
- Delete any page breaks you may have put in previously so that the text for the cover page and first page of the document run together.
- Place your cursor anywhere on the page you want to act as the cover page.
- Double-click the new style your created for the cover page (e.g. Cover page).
- Place your cursor before the text you want to appear on the first page of the document.
- Select Insert | Manual Break.
- Select Page.
- From the Style pull-down menu, select the page style for the main body of your document (e.g. Main Page).
- Check Change Page Number and type the page number you want for the first page of your document.
- Click OK.
Insert Page Numbering
- Place your cursor in the footer of the first page you want to be numbered.
- Select Insert | Fields | Page Number.
